The university trains students in mechanical and instrumentation engineering, civil and power engineering, information science and computer engineering, natural sciences, economics, architecture, design, and humanities in 41 bachelor and 33 master programs, 5 engineer’s specialties, 5 PhD programs.
On the date of its 60 th anniversary it was named after the legendary small arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. At present Kalashnikov ISTU is a leading higher educational institution in the region and one of the leading technical schools in Russia, a training center of engineers and academics.

Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University was founded in 1952. On 22 February 2012 Izhevsk State Technical University celebrated its 60th anniversary and was named after Mikhail Kalashnikov, a legendary designer of small arms and Honorary Professor of ISTU.
