Friedrich Wilhelm, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg was a German-Danish prince and officer who was the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck from 1816 to 1825, and the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg from 1825 to 1831. Friedrich Wilhelm is the progenitor of the House of Glücksburg.
King Wilhelm gave the castle back to the family, and in 1871 Duke Karl, the then head of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, resided in the castle. Karl was the brother of Christian IX, who, in 1846, withdrew from the Danish state service because of his opposition to the policy of the "Eiderdänen" who favoured a total merger of Schleswig with Denmark.
In Amalienborg Palace on 19 May 1838 she married second Karl, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, eldest brother of the future King Christian IX of Denmark, and took residence in Kiel. Her second marriage was said to have been very happy. Both her marriages were childless.
Friedrich Ferdinand succeeded to the headship of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and title duke upon the death of his father on 27 November 1885. Friedrich Ferdinand was the fourth child and youngest son of Prince Albrecht of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1863–1948) and his first wife Countess Ortrud of Ysenburg and Büdingen (1879–1918).
