Carl Bernadotte was a prince who renounced his royal title and position, when he was third in line for the Swedish throne, to marry a commoner, Kerstin Wijkmark. His family was furious. After the marriage in 1946, the prince became a businessman in New York and preferred to be known as Mr Carl J. Bernadotte.
