Later the castle was occupied by the powerful Butler family for almost 600 years during which time many alterations and additions were made to the castle. In 1967 Arthur, 6th Marquess of Ormonde presented the castle to the people of Kilkenny in return for a token payment of £50.

Kilbeggan Distillery is also worth a visit as is nearby Lough Ennel. Belvedere House and Gardens are also worth seeing - and there is a lovely cafe there. And Fore Abbey is fabulous.
