He and his wife were assassinated on June 30, 1934. Gustav Ritter von Kahr had been instrumental in quashing the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 and was assassinated for 'treason'.

Born into a Prussian family with a long military tradition, von Rundstedt entered the Prussian Army in 1892. During World War I, he served mainly as a staff officer.
