Die Einwohnerzahl sank mit dem wirtschaftlichen Niedergang bis 1757 auf 9400 und stieg danach wieder an. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg brachten Flüchtlinge und Vertriebene innerhalb weniger Monate einen Zuwachs um 18.000 Personen auf 53.000 Einwohner.

Hace 2 días · The Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg were elevated by the Holy Roman Emperor to the rank of Prince-Elector in 1692, which was confirmed by the Imperial Diet in 1708. Thus, the principality was upgraded to the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg, colloquially known as the Electorate of Hanover after Calenberg's capital (see also House of Hanover).

Hace 3 días · The city of Braunschweig went to the senior branch of the house, the Wolfenbüttel line, while Lüneburg eventually ended up with the Hanover line. Although the territory had been split, all branches of the family continued to style themselves as the House of Brunswick-Lüneburg. In 1884, the senior branch of the House of Welf became extinct.
