  4. Lady Hester Lucy Stanhope was born in 1776, the first child of Charles, Earl Stanhope, and his wife, Lady Hester, née Pitt, who died when Hester was only four. She grew up at the family home, Chevening in Kent, and at 24 went to live with her grandmother, Lady Chatham, widow of the former Prime Minister William Pitt the Elder, in Somerset.
