Upon the death of Edward in 1553, Mary fled to Norfolk, as Lady Jane Grey had seized the throne and was recognized as queen for a few days. The country, however, considered Mary the rightful ruler, and within some days she made a triumphal entry into London.
Mary’s immediate history dramatically underscores the significant impact of placing ‘Rose Redde’ and ‘the Lady Mary’ prominently alongside the royal escutcheon.
