Life. Charles was the eldest son of Landgrave Philip of Hesse-Philippsthal from his marriage to Catherine Amalie (1654–1736), daughter of Count Charles Otto of Solms-Laubach. He succeeded his father in 1721 as Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal. Charles joined the Danish army in 1701 and fought in the War of the Spanish Succession.
He was the son of Prince Frederick William of Hesse-Kassel and Princess Anna of Prussia. Frederick died on 24 September 1655 in Costian near Poznań, Poland, during the Second Northern War, in the army of his brother-in-law Charles X Gustav of Sweden. He was buried in the Market Church in Eschwege; it took two years before his coffin arrived there. Hesse-Eschwege fell to his brother Ernest of Hesse-Rheinfels.
