Predictions of economic and labor disruption caused by the abolition of slavery proved to be unfounded.

Isabel of Braganza, Princess Imperial of Brazil signed the Lei Áurea in 1888, abolishing slavery in Brazil. Pedro I's successor in Brazil was his five-year-old son, Pedro II.

The situation worsened in 1828 when the war in the south resulted in Brazil's loss of Cisplatina. During the same year in Lisbon, Maria II's throne was usurped by Prince Dom Miguel, Pedro I's younger brother.
