The town has about 9,500 inhabitants. By area, it is the largest rural municipality ("Gemeinde") in what was formerly West Germany, and the 7th-largest overall.
Lenggries, ursprünglich ein Flößerdorf an der Isar, war bis 1848 Bestandteil der Hofmark bzw. des Patrimonialgerichts Hohenburg und führte deshalb kein eigenes Siegel. Der Hirsch im Wappen soll auch an die alte Schützenvereinigung von Lenggries erinnern, die eine eigene Standarte hatte.
