As such, he was Consort of the British monarch from their marriage on 10 February 1840, until his death in 1861. He received the unique title of Prince Consort in 1857 from his wife.

King William IV, however, disapproved of any match with the Coburgs, and instead favoured the suit of Prince Alexander, second son of the Prince of Orange.
