Leopold Friedrich, Herzog von Anhalt, ward als der älteste Sohn des Erbprinzen Friedrich und der Erbprinzessin Christiane Amalie, geb. Prinzessin von Hessen-Homburg am 1. Octbr. 1794 in Dessau geboren.
Leopold IV d'Anhalt (Dessau 1794 - 1871) va ser un duc d'Anhalt que unificà tots els territoris històrics d'Anhalt en un únic ducat amb capital a la ciutat de Dessau. Nascut el dia 1 d'octubre de l'any 1794 a la ciutat de Dessau , fill del prínceu hereu Frederic d'Anhalt-Dessau i de la landgravina Amàlia de Hessen-Homburg .
The Duchy of Anhalt ( German: Herzogtum Anhalt) was a historical German duchy. The duchy was located between the Harz Mountains in the west and the River Elbe and beyond to the Fläming Heath in the east. The territory was once ruled by the House of Ascania, and is now part of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt .
En 1315, la branche d'Anhalt-Aschersleben s'éteint. Ses terres sont rattachées à la principauté épiscopale de Halberstadt. En 1847, à la mort du duc Henri d'Anhalt-Köthen, Léopold IV hérite du duché d'Anhalt-Köthen. Les deux duchés fusionnent en 1853 et Léopold devient duc d'Anhalt-Dessau-Köthen. Hertog Leopold IV Frederik van Anhalt-Dessau-Köthen erfde Bernburg en verenigde alle Anhaltse hertogdommen tot een staat, met Ballenstedt als zomerresidentie. In 1866 werd Anhalt lid van de Noord-Duitse Bond en in 1871 trad het land toe tot het Duitse Keizerrijk .
