En 1315, la branche d'Anhalt-Aschersleben s'éteint. Ses terres sont rattachées à la principauté épiscopale de Halberstadt. En 1396, l'Anhalt-Zerbst est divisé entre les fils de Jean II : Sigismond I er devient prince d'Anhalt-Dessau ; Albert IV devient prince d'Anhalt-Köthen. Leopold IV Frederick, Duke of Anhalt (1 October 1794 – 22 May 1871) was a German prince of the House of Ascania. From 1817 until 1853 he was ruler of the duchy of Anhalt-Dessau and from 1847 until 1853 also ruler of the duchy of Anhalt-Köthen. From 1853 until 1863 he was the ruler of the joined duchy of Anhalt-Dessau-Köthen and from 1863 the first ruler of the united duchy of Anhalt.
From 1391 onwards, he was the effective ruler of Further Austria, and from 1396 to 1406 he was ruler in Tyrol too. He married Catherine de Valois of Burgundy, daughter of Philip II, Duke of Burgundy, in 1393. She died in 1425, and they had no surviving children. The Duchy of Anhalt ( German: Herzogtum Anhalt) was a historical German duchy. The duchy was located between the Harz Mountains in the west and the River Elbe and beyond to the Fläming Heath in the east. The territory was once ruled by the House of Ascania, and is now part of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt .

Leopold IV d'Anhalt (Dessau 1794 - 1871) va ser un duc d'Anhalt que unificà tots els territoris històrics d'Anhalt en un únic ducat amb capital a la ciutat de Dessau. Nascut el dia 1 d'octubre de l'any 1794 a la ciutat de Dessau , fill del prínceu hereu Frederic d'Anhalt-Dessau i de la landgravina Amàlia de Hessen-Homburg .
