Founded in 1826 by Ernest Anton, the sixth duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, it is a cadet branch of the Saxon House of Wettin. One agnatic branch currently reigns in Belgium —the descendants of Leopold I —and another reigned until the death of Elizabeth II in the United Kingdom —the descendants of Albert, Prince Consort .
Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (German: Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha), or Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (German: Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha [ˈzaksn̩ ˈkoːbʊʁk ˈɡoːtaː]), was an Ernestine duchy in Thuringia ruled by a branch of the House of Wettin, consisting of territories in the present-day states of Thuringia and Bavaria in Germany.
Leopold Joris Christiaan Frederik van Saksen-Coburg-Saalfeld (Coburg, 16 december 1790 – Laken, 10 december 1865), prins van Saksen-Coburg-Saalfeld, hertog van Saksen, was van 21 juli 1831 tot aan zijn dood de eerste koning der Belgen: Leopold I van België.
30 de abr. de 2015 · Koning Leopold I wist vervolgens zijn zus aan de Britse prins Edward uit te huwelijken. Dat leidde tot de geboorte van koningin Victoria, Victoria koppelde hij weer aan zijn én haar neef Albert van Saksen-Coburg en Gotha.
