The Liberties of the Tower, or the Tower Liberty was a liberty in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Central London, which includes both Tower Hill and the Tower of London. The area was defined sometime after 1200 to provide an open area around the Tower to ensure its defensibility.

Essex was found guilty and, on 25 February 1601, was beheaded on Tower Green, the last person to be beheaded in the Tower of London. It was reported to have taken three strokes by the executioner Thomas Derrick to complete the beheading.

The area was defined sometime after 1200 to provide an open area around the Tower to ensure its defensibility.
The bounds of the "Liberties" were, roughly, the Tower of London to the east, and the Temple Bar, on Fleet Street, to the west. Beyond these Liberties was Westminster, and the suburbs that would, in fact, soon be swallowed up by the prodigious growth of the city during the next century.
