According to Census 2000, 350 people are working in Lichtensteig, and 704 commute from outside the township. In 1975, the Council of Europe honored the town for the preservation of its historic site.

The Catholic "inner cantons" and the Imperial Abbey of Saint Gall fought the Protestant cantons of Bern and Zürich as well as the abbatial subjects of Toggenburg .
