Llywelyn, who was born around 1223 was the son Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, himself the son of Llywelyn the Great, and Senena ferch Rhodri. Known as Llywelyn ‘the Last’, his ambition to create a permanent, independent Welsh principality came close to realization. The second son of Gruffydd, son of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth , he may have been designated the heir of his uncle Dafydd ap Llywelyn .
