In addition to being the only son of Lord Charles FitzRoy, he was grandson of Augustus Henry FitzRoy – the 3rd Duke of Grafton and, for a short time, the Prime Minister of Great Britain (1768 to 1770). FitzRoy was educated at Harrow and joined the Royal Horse Guards at the age of 16.
