Montagu, who was bisexual, was also known for being convicted and imprisoned for homosexual sex in 1954. He was a member of the House of Lords from 7 November 1947 until his death. Montagu was born in London. His father, John, died when Edward was aged two in 1929. He was married twice, first to Belinda Crossley and later to Fiona Margaret Herbert.
