Elliott have described him, respectively, as an "undistinguished and insignificant man," [2] a "miserable monarch," [3] and a "pallid, anonymous creature, whose only virtue appeared to reside in a total absence of vice."
Having recently read several biographies of Charlemagne (including Janet Nelson's excellent and recent King and Emperor), I was hoping to read and learn more about his son Louis. I have and plan to read the ninth-century biography by the Astronomer, but hoping to find contemporary scholarly works to read.
