Louise Taft. Louisa Maria "Louise" Torrey (September 11, 1827 – December 8, 1907) was the second wife of Alphonso Taft, and the mother of U.S. President William Howard Taft . Background. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the first daughter of Samuel Davenport Torrey (1789–1877) and his second wife, the former Susan Holman Waters (1803–1866).

Deborah Emont Scott, the Louise Taft Semple President/CEO of the Taft Museum of Art, announced that she will conclude her tenure in summer 2022 following the completion of the museum’s widely publicized Bicentennial Infrastructure Project.
The original portraits in this room are of Louise, Alphonso, and his parents, Peter Rawson and Sylvia Howard Taft. They were made in 1859 after persuading Grandpa Taft to agree to a sitting. The grandparents were major influences in the daily life of the household although they did not entertain as much as the younger Tafts.
