Louis IV (German: Ludwig IV. Großherzog von Hessen und bei Rhein ; 12 September 1837 – 13 March 1892) was the Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine from 13 June 1877 until his death in 1892. Through his marriage to Queen Victoria's second daughter Alice, he was connected to the British royal family.

Grand Duchy of Hesse. The Grand Duchy of Hesse ( German: Großherzogtum Hessen) was a former state that existed in modern-day Germany. It was formed in 1806 after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire as a result of the actions of Napoleon, who then elevated the former Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt to the level of grand duchy.
In 1854, Grand Duke Ludwig III added a statute to the order that if a member was guilty of an unworthy behavior, they could no longer use the insignia of the order in their coat of arms or title. In 1860, Grand Duke Ludwig III established detailed instructions for wearing the order. In 1912, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig revised the statutes.
