Louis IV (German: Ludwig IV. Großherzog von Hessen und bei Rhein; 12 September 1837 – 13 March 1892) was the Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine from 13 June 1877 until his death in 1892. Through his marriage to Queen Victoria's second daughter Alice, he was connected to the British royal family.

A través de su matrimonio con la segunda hija de la reina Victoria, Alicia, estuvo conectado con la familia real británica.
Hessen-Darmstadt was formed out of the Obergrafschaft ('upper county') of the former 'Imperial Immediacy' of the county of Katzenelnbogen, an 'immediacy' being a district which answered directly to the Holy Roman emperor rather than a local overlord or prince.

Sobrino del Gran Duque Luis III de Hesse-Darmstadt, esposo de la Princesa Alicia del Reino Unido; descendientes suyos son Lord Luis Mountbatten o el Príncipe Felipe, Duque de Edimburgo.
