Françoise de Rochechouart de Mortemart, later known as Madame de Montespan, was the third of five children born to Diane de Grandseigne. Diane, daughter of Jean, seigneur de Marsillac, and Catherine de la Beraudière (of the prominent Frottier de la Messelière family), was the wife of Gabriel de Rochechouart, marquis of Mortemart and of Lussac and Vivonne, prince of Tonnay-Charente.

Ludvík XIV. kouzlu její neskonalé krásy propadl až v letech 1666-1667. Asi o 7 let později se pak Madame de Montespan stala královou oficiální milenkou a vytlačila tak definitivně Mademoiselle de la Vallière.
