As the coffin of Magdalena Luther awaited burial, the mourners gathered in Luther’s home sang a verse from Psalm 79: ‘Domine ne memineris iniquitatum nostrarum antiquarum’ (‘Lord, remember not against us former iniquities’). On hearing this verse Luther burst out: ‘O Lord, Lord, Lord, not only former iniquities but also present ones!
