Born in 1143, he was the second of three sons of Henry, earl of Northumberland (d.1152) and Ada de Warenne (d.1178). He succeeded to the Scottish throne after the death of his eldest brother, Malcolm IV, on 9 December 1165, and was inaugurated on 24 December 1165.

He was the brother of Kings Malcolm IV (d.1165) and William I (d.1214) of Scotland and had three sisters, Margaret, Ada and Maud.
