A woman of tact and discretion, Mrs Fitzherbert was one of the great beauties of her day. Although a Catholic and a widow she was persuaded to marry the Prince of Wales in a secret ceremony in 1785. María Ana Fitzherbert (cuyo nombre de soltera fue María Ana Smythe) nació en Bambridge, Hampshire, el 26 de julio de 1756, siendo la hija mayor de Walter Smythe y de María Ana Errington. Fue educada en París, y contrajo su primer matrimonio, en junio de 1775 , con Eduardo Weld, del castillo de Lulworth, el cual era 16 años mayor que ella.
Jorge había intentado casarse una vez, con su amante María Ana Fitzherbert, pero ese matrimonio se consideró inválido a los ojos de la ley porque el príncipe no tenía el consentimiento de su padre, el rey Jorge III, requisito obligatorio y consagrado en el Acta de Matrimonios Reales de 1772.
