They follow the lead of Vivaldi in that they aren’t a small group of instruments versus a larger group of instruments (as in a concerto grosso ) but are all based on various solo combinations.

Originally titled ‘Concerto for many instruments’, they’re now known as the Brandenburg Concertos after Bach submitted them to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg-Schwedt in 1721 in the hope of getting a job.
