Maria was one of the three the illegitimate daughters of Hon. Edward Walpole of Frogmore House in Windsor, by Dorothy Clements, a charming and beautiful milliner from Darlington in Co. Durham. This lady bore him five children but, although a faithful lover, he never married her because he feared the opposition of his father, Sir Robert.
Maria Walpole (1725?-1801) illegitimate daugher of Sir Robert Walpole, prime minister and his mistress Maria Skerrett; the daughter later became the wife of Colonel Charles Churchill. She is wearing ermine, an indication of noble status that she did not have until her father obtained for her a patent of precedence as the daughter of an earl in 1742.

Maria Walpole (1739-1807) était la nièce de Sir Horace Walpole, écrivain et amateur d’art proche de Reynolds, qui lui commanda ce portrait de sa nièce, exécuté en 1761. Elle avait épousé en 1759 le comte James Waldegrave (1715-1763) ; leur fille était née le 24 mars 1760, elle a donc entre un et deux ans sur ce portrait.
