Vaspurakan Region of southeast Armenia annexed in 1022 by Basil II (q.v.), as Byzantium (q.v.) expanded eastward. From the opposite direction there was pressure on Armenia from the Turks (q.v.), all of which combined to encourage large-scale Armenian emigration into Byzantine territory.
