He was the son of Duncan, 1st Earl of Carrick. He married Margaret Stewart, daughter of Walter Stewart, 3rd High Steward of Scotland and Beatrix of Angus, in 1234.2 He died in 1256.2.

HIS EXACT PARENTAGE IS NOT KNOWN. In 1250 Duncan Earl of Carrick died and was succeeded as earl by Niall of Carrick. Niall was either Duncan's younger son or grandson.
