  7. Martha Wayles initially married Bathurst Skelton in 1766, a classmate of Thomas Jefferson at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg. They had 1 son, John Wayles Skelton, who died suddenly of a fever on June 10, 1771. Her husband Bathurst Skelton died in September 1768 in Williamsburg after an accident, leaving Martha a rich widow.
