Mary Shelton was a cousin of Anne Boleyn and part of the circle of courtiers who surrounded the queen. She later married Sir Anthony Heveningham, the name by which she is identified in the inscription on the drawing. This is one of the most meticulously worked of Holbein’s drawings.
Mary Shelton was the daughter of Sir John Shelton. She was part of the lively literary circle that surrounded her cousin Anne Boleyn at court. Among her close acquaintances were Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and she was engaged to Surrey's esquire, Sir Thomas Clere, before Clere's death in 1545.
