When Mary of Guise arrived in Scotland, James Hamilton of Finnart was given 400 French gold crowns to repair the palace. In August 1539 he was paid for rebuilding the king's kitchen , at the north end of the great hall, with a fireplace, an oven, and a room for silver vessels, and another for keeping coal.

In 1560 Mary of Guise fell ill at Edinburgh Castle, while the castle was under threat of siege and English forces held much of Edinburgh and Leith. She died on 11th June 1560 but the political situation was so volatile that her body lay in a coffin in St Margaret’s Chapel for many months before being moved to France in March 1561.

Mary, Queen of Scots (born 8 December 1542). James V died on 14 December, six days after his daughter Mary's birth. Mary of Guise then engaged in a power struggle with James Hamilton, 3d Earl of Arran (circa 1517-75), who had been appointed regent for the infant queen. In 1548 she arranged her daughter's betrothal to the French Dauphin.
