  5. In 1560 Mary of Guise fell ill at Edinburgh Castle, while the castle was under threat of siege and English forces held much of Edinburgh and Leith. Mary of Guise then engaged in a power struggle with James Hamilton, 3d Earl of Arran (circa 1517-75), who had been appointed regent for the infant queen.
