Mary of Modena was born in Italy as Maria Beatrice Anna Margherita Isabella d’Este. Her father was Alfonso IV. d’Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio. D’Este Family had a seat in Modena (where the palace was located). Mary was born there, and their state included one part of Italy, in the area north of Tuscany.

She was the only daughter of Alfonso IV, Duke of Modena (1634–1662), and his wife Laura Martinozzi (1639–1687).
