Maud Martha is the only novel by the poet Gwendolyn Brooks, telling the story of the life of Maud Martha Brown, a Black girl, and the African-American experience in 1940s Chicago. It is very short - my edition has 180 pages - and is very reminiscent of Brooks' poetry skills as it is written in vignettes.
