Maud est née à East Sheen Lodge, Richmond-upon-Thames dans le Surrey, le 3 avril 1893. Son père est Alexander Duff, 1er duc de Fife [3]. Il est élevé du titre de comte à celui de duc de Fife après son mariage avec la mère de Maud, la princesse Louise du Royaume-Uni, fille aînée du futur roi Edouard VII [3].

The English dukedom took precedence over the Scottish one and a female could inherit it. Alexandra, Maud's sister became the 2nd Duchess of Fife (English version) in 1912.
