Deeply engaged with Rousseau's pedagogical treatise 'Emile, and with contemporary debate concerning inherited and acquired traits and tendencies, Mauprat is an expression of Sand's Utopian vision of arelationship governed by free choice and equality.

The novel is narrated by a much older Bernard, who is entertaining some visitors with the story of his life, but apart from the first chapter, the book is structured as a straightforward first person narrative.
Lodged at the ruinous remains of La Roche Mauprat, hidden deep in a deserted ravine, are Tristan de Mauprat and his eight sons. They carry on the business of depredation with wild abandon, willing to use any violence or deception to further their brigandage, thus earning themselves the soubriquet Coupe-Jarret, or cut-throat, and the eternal enmity of the powers that be.
