30 de sept. de 2014 · Prince Maximilian was serving with the Grand Ducal Hessen Dragoons when he was severely wounded by British machine-gun fire at Saint-Jean-Chappelle, near Bailleul, France on October 13, 1914. He was taken to a Trappist monastery where the monks cared for him, but the British advanced and took control of the monastery.
The items belonged to the German princely house of Hesse-Kassel, an old noble family with ties to the British and Italian royal families. By 1940, the head of the house of Hesse-Kassel was Prince Philipp von Hessen, who was considered by some to be part of Hitler’s inner circle.

Princess Margaret was first attracted to Prince Maximilian of Baden. When he did not reciprocate her affection, she moved on to her second choice, Max's close friend, Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse, future head of the Hesse-Kassel dynasty and future elected King of Finland.
