The Priory was founded in 1114 and stood on this site until 1538. By 1600 many textile mills had been built here next to the River Wandle.

  3. 14 de abr. de 2024 · Merton Priory, founded in 1114 by Gilbert Norman, Sheriff of Surrey under Henry I, was colonised by canons of the Augustinian Priory at Huntingdon. It became an important centre of learning, attracting such distinguised pupils as Nicholas Breakspeare (later Adrian IV, the first English Pope) in 1125, and Thomas Becket in 1130.
