  5. Michael Ivanovitch Rostovtzeff was born in Kiev, Russia, on November 10, 1870. He taught ancient history at the University of Wisconsin, 1920-1925, and Yale University, 1925-1939, where he also served as director of archaeological research and curator of ancient art, 1939-1944. Rostovtzeff died in New Haven, Connecticut, on October 20, 1952.
