On Christmas eve 1143 Miles was hunting in the Forest of Dean; a companion loosed an arrow at a deer, but it hit and killed the earl. The canons of Llanthony Priory near Gloucester made ready to bury him, but the right was claimed by the monks of St Peter's, Gloucester. The immediate dispute was settled in favour of Llanthony.
