Mindaugas successfully asserted himself over other leading Lithuanian nobles and tribal chiefs, including his brother and his nephews, in 1236.

The House of Mindaugas (Lithuanian: Mindaugaičiai) was the first royal family of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, centered on Mindaugas, the first known and undoubted sovereign of Lithuania. He was crowned as King of Lithuania in 1253 and assassinated ten years later.

Precious few details are known about his coronation as the first Lithuanian king, except that he did receive a crown from Pope Innocent IV.
