Abstract: Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, second elected president of the Republic of Texas, was a statesman, soldier, historian, and poet. These are Lamar’s personal and official papers as well as material gathered by Lamar as a collector of historical documents with a particular interest in the histories of Texas and Latin American republics.
Lamar, Mirabeau Buonaparte (1798–1859)Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar (b. 16 August 1798; d. 19 December 1859), president of the republic of Texas (1838–1841). Born near Louisville, Georgia, Lamar founded (1828) and published the Columbus Enquirer, and served as secretary to Georgia governor George M. Troup and as state senator before moving to the Mexican province of Texas in 1835.

Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar was born near Louisville, Jefferson County, Georgia; expert horseman and fencer, excellent speaker, and writer of poetry. Many of his poems are published. He established the Columbus Enquirer newspaper in Muscogee County, Georgia and was elected state senator in 1829.
