Hace 3 días · Belgium is a constitutional, popular monarchy and a federal parliamentary democracy. The bicameral federal parliament is composed of a Senate and a Chamber of Representatives. The former is made up of 50 senators appointed by the parliaments of the communities and regions and 10 co-opted senators.
Hace 3 días · After Belgium became an independent country following the victorious Belgian Revolution of 1830–1831, it claimed the entire Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg as being part of Belgium, however, the Dutch King who was also Grand Duke of Luxembourg, as well as Prussia, did not want to lose their grip on the mighty fortress of Luxembourg and did not agree with the Belgian claims.

On this day, 21 July 1831, Leopold I arrived in Brussels to be crowned the first monarch of Belgium. At a ceremony at the Place Royale, the young prince swore allegiance to a new Belgian constitution written by the national congress.

The crown was offered to Leopold I of Saksen-Coburg and Gotha who swore his constitutional oath on 21 July 1831 as King of the Belgians - not of Belgium - since he was chosen by the peoples’ representatives.
