A Protestant, he published congregational psalm tunes, motets which show the influence initially of Lassus but, after Schütz's return from Italy, of the Italian style.

He was also the proprietor of the Kronberg Palace Hotel up until his death. He died of lung illness in a hospital in Frankfurt, Germany at age 86.
