The mutiny on the Royal Navy vessel HMS Bounty occurred in the South Pacific Ocean on 28 April 1789. Disaffected crewmen, led by acting-Lieutenant Fletcher Christian , seized control of the ship from their captain, Lieutenant William Bligh , and set him and eighteen loyalists adrift in the ship's open launch .

Mutiny on the Bounty was the first motion picture filmed in the Ultra Panavision 70 widescreen process. It was partly shot on location in the South Pacific . Panned by critics, the film was a box office flop , losing more than $6 million (equivalent to $60 million in 2023).

Flynn noted in his autobiography that whenever he mentioned that he'd played Christian in an Australian version of Mutiny on the Bounty two years before Gable, no one ever believed him.
