Nathaniel Gorham (May 27, 1738 – June 11, 1796; sometimes spelled Nathanial) was an American Founding Father, merchant, and politician from Massachusetts. He was a delegate from the Bay Colony to the Continental Congress and for six months served as the presiding officer of that body under the Articles of Confederation.

January 21, 1789. Nathaniel Gorham of Massachusetts was elected President of the United States, in Congress Assembled June 6, 1786 and served until November 13, 1786. He was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts on May 27th, 1738 and died there on June 11th, 1796. He was the son of a small boat operator growing-up in a family of modest means.

The youth's education was minimal. When he was about 15 years of age, he was apprenticed to a New London, CT, merchant.
He was active in state politics and supported the revolutionary cause. Gorham served in the Continental Congress, including a period as its president, and was an important member of the Philadelphia Convention, speaking often and serving on various committees.
