Eleanor Gwyn was an English stage actress and celebrity figure of the Restoration period. Praised by Samuel Pepys for her comic performances as one of the first actresses on the English stage, she became best known for being a long-time mistress of King Charles II of England.
Nell Gwynn was one of the first ever English actresses. Before she joined the King’s Players in the 1660s, all parts in plays – even female ones – were performed by men. And middle-class men at that. Nell acted at the Drury Lane theatre in Covent Garden while still a teenager. She used the stage name ‘Madame Ellen’.

Charles was married in 1662 to Portugal's Catherine of Braganza but her pregnancies all ended in miscarriages, causing the King to look elsewhere for a "supplier" of children.
